Baltic States Join EU Power Grid, Leaving BRELL Behind

2025-02-13

A truly historic moment! Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia left the Moscow controlled BRELL electricity system ring on Saturday morning and since 9th of February is working in a synchronous mode with the electricity systems of Continental Europe from tomorrow. Synchronisation project with the value of over 1.6 bln Eur is nearing its successful completion!

The Baltic States were the last three EU Member States whose electricity grids remained fully integrated with the Russian and Belarusian system, where Russia centrally controlled the electricity frequency. This dependence left them vulnerable to Russia’s weaponization of energy. By synchronizing their electricity networks with those of EU Member States and neighboring countries, the Baltic States have ended their reliance on Russian-controlled infrastructure. This transition grants them full autonomy over their power systems while enhancing energy security across the Eastern Baltic Sea region and the broader EU.

The successful completion of this EU-supported project highlights the commitment of all participating EU Member States, particularly the three Baltic States and Poland. It is also a testament to the collaborative efforts of businesses, investors, and transmission system operators, whose dedication enabled the project to be completed 10 months ahead of schedule.
